The Pampanga River Basin Committee (PRBC) was among the 21 “water champions” in the country that made strides in achieving water conservation and sustainability of the Philippine natural resources. During the 2019 World Water Day (WWD) Awards, the PRBC, chaired by Tarlac Governor Susan Yap, received the “Bagani ng Katubigan” award for efficiently implementing the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Strategy in the Pampanga River Basin. Conservation and Development Division chief Minerva Martinez, who received the award in behalf of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) here, said the organization involved in the PRBC is unique on its own, since it is under the Regional Development Council (RDC), while other river basins in the country are managed by their respective river basin management council. The PRBC, through the RDC, oversees the implementation of the IWRM in the Basin. ###
Candaba wetlands acts as a refuge for an average of 7,000 migratory birds escaping the winter season annually. However, land conversion and climate change have gradually reduced the number of migratory species nesting in this ecological habitat from 64 species observed in 2016, to just 16 species counted during the recently concluded Asian Waterbird Census. More than a wintering area for birds, our wetlands act as the "kidney of the earth," filtering chemicals and toxic substances from the water before it drains into the sea. During the recent celebration of World Wetlands Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources called for the protection of these vital ecosystems, reminding people to stop draining the wetlands and not to treat them as "wastelands". Based on studies, the total loss of natural wetlands around the world is estimated to be 54 to 57 percent. This is a significant figure, considering that wetlands continuously remove and store atmospheric carbon, helping stave off global warming and mitigate the effects of climate change. ###
More than 5,000 kilograms of solid waste were collected in the rivers of Obando in Bulacan and Guagua in Pampanga including the 700 meters stretch of Mariveles coastline in Bataan during the recent kick-off of the Manila Bay launching. According to Paquito Moreno, Jr., executive director of DENR regional office, the cleanup was conducted simultaneously in Central Luzon, Manila in National Capital Region (NCR) and Cavite in Region IV-A to avert the further degradation of the historic bay and bring back its water level fit for swimming. He said more than 5,000 volunteers and employees from the DENR and other government agencies, local government units (LGU), business sectors, academe and civil society organization actively participated in the event. ###
