Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (seated, center) responds to Mr. Manuel Galvez (seated, right) of the United Filipino Consumers and Commuters during the first day of her CA confirmation hearing held Wednesday, March 8, at the Senate.  Galvez opposed Lopez’s confirmation as DENR secretary alleging that the air quality monitoring stations purchased by the DENR were “not calibrated and are not giving correct data”.  Lopez said equipment were purchased before her time but nonetheless recognizes the problems that were stated by Galvez, stressing that the DENR “has already investigated the matter and taken steps.” ###

Lopez says that “there are no sacred cows” and that her family’s companies “will be treated just like everyone else.” ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (seated, center) reads some provisions from the Philippine Mining Act to underscore that her action on erring mining operations was consistent with the DENR mandate to protect the environment, during the Commission on Appointments hearing held Wednesday at the Senate.  Lopez issued closure orders to 23 mining operations following a nationwide mining audit. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (right), Senator Cynthia Villar (left) and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim grace the launching of the Protect Wildlife Project, March 6, 2017 at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.  A 5-year project, Protect Wildlife is the first USAID initiative in the Philippines to align with the U.S. government’s newly signed Eliminate, Neutralize and Disrupt Wildlife Trafficking Act of 2016 which addresses the global illegal wildlife trade.  The project, to be implemented in close coordination with various government agencies such as the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau, will commence in Palawan, Zamboanga City and Tawi-Tawi. ###
